Abstract
Objective: To map, evaluate and synthesize the current state of the available evidence regarding the influence of social media on oral health promotion in adolescents. Methods: This scoping review is based on five databases, in which the descriptors: 'adolescents', 'social media', 'oral health' and derivations associated with the Boolean operators AND and OR were used. Articles that responded exclusively to the guiding question of the research were included, excluding those that were duplicates and that did not fit the theme. The research was registered in Open Science Framework (OSF). Results: A total of 271 articles were identified, and 9 original studies fully met the eligibility criteria. Studies conducted on 4 continents were observed, covering the age range of 10 to 24 years. These works assessed the impact of social media in different contexts, including dental caries, literacy, and hygiene guidance. Final considerations: The publications point out the frequent interaction of teenagers with social media. Therefore, these can represent an alternative in education and promotion of oral health for the adolescent population. However, future studies are needed to validate their benefits. For this, it is necessary to implement actions using social media for this purpose.
