Abstract

Objective: To describe the knowledge about Diabetes Mellitus (DM) of patients diagnosed with DM cared for at a UBS in a city in the state of Piauí. Methods: This is a cross-sectional, descriptive study conducted with 26 individuals of both sexes aged 18 and above. Users were investigated regarding their knowledge about Diabetes Mellitus using two questionnaires (DKN-A and ATT-19) administered through Google Forms. Additionally, sociodemographic and clinical data of the patients were collected. The obtained data were organized in tables and analyzed through the Google Forms platform and the EPI Info application. Results: The sample, with an average age of 55 years, predominantly consisted of females (80.8%) with incomplete primary education. Only 34.6% of individuals scored well in terms of knowledge about DM, indicating a limited understanding of DM in the majority of the population analyzed. Regarding attitude, only 7.6% scored 70 or higher, indicating a predisposition to a negative view of the disease. Conclusion: It is concluded that the active adult population participating in this study has inadequate knowledge about Diabetes Mellitus, as well as a pessimistic perspective about their own condition.
