Abstract
Objective: To evaluate patients with degenerative changes in the ATM previously visualized by CT cone beam images (CBCT), relating such changes to clinical diagnostics and TMD signs of joint. Methods: We evaluated 38 patients who had previously conducted the examination of CBCT in the Faculty of Dentistry, Federal University of Juiz de Fora. Subjects were grouped according to the clinical diagnosis through the RDC/TMD. It was considered the presence of oral limitation for a maximum mouth opening, laterality and protrusion. The presence of coarse sputtering was also evaluated. Results: Among exclusively clinical diagnoses, only 10.5% were conclusive, classifying patients as having osteoarthritis. There was no statistical difference between the presence of limited mouth opening (p=0.63) and excursive movements of laterality (p=0.55) and protrusion (p=0.58) and this diagnosis. The presence of sclerosis in the articular tubercle region was significant (p=0.08) in individuals with limited mouth opening. Conclusion: The presence of sclerosis in the region of the articular eminence was significant in individuals with limited mouth opening. Gross crepitus occurred only in the group with degenerative changes (10.5%) and all patients had changes on imaging examination. 89.5% of degenerative changes were clinically underdiagnosed.
