Abstract

Objective: to describe the epidemiological profile of patients admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) with COVID-19 who died. Method: this is a cross-sectional, descriptive and quantitative study developed in ICUs for patients with COVID-19 in a reference hospital located in the city of Juazeiro do Norte, state of Ceará, Brazil. Data were collected through a semi-structured form with variables that involved the sociodemographic and clinical profile of patients through information contained in the physical record. Results: the profile of patients with COVID-19 who required intensive care were mostly men, elderly, with low education and who had some cardiometabolic comorbidity, with more than half of them developing acute kidney injury and needing renal replacement therapy, as well as practically all of them required ventilatory support and extensive associated drug therapy. Conclusion: it is clear that the profile of patients with COVID-19 in the ICU is extremely serious and requires complex treatment in order to provide targeted care with efficient and effective strategy, flows and processes.
