Abstract

Objective: To compare the risk of sarcopenia using calf circumference versus adjusted calf circumference in trauma patients. Methods: This is a prospective longitudinal observational study. The sample consisted of trauma patients, hospitalized for at least 24 hours, in the emergency department of a tertiary hospital in the Federal District, aged ≥18 years. The variables analyzed were the risk of sarcopenia, malnutrition and calf circumference. Results: From August 2022 to August 2023, 61 trauma patients were evaluated in the emergency rooms of the Hospital de Base in the Federal District. When considering calf adjustment, 22.9% of patients without risk of sarcopenia by SARC-CALF were classified as having risk of sarcopenia when adjusting CP (p<0.05). When analyzing the adjusted CP and nutritional diagnosis, a difference was observed only between non-malnourished and moderately malnourished individuals (p=0.020). Conclusion: Failure to adjust CP may underestimate the risk classification of sarcopenia, especially in cases of sarcopenic obesity.
