Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the oral clinical manifestations identified in patients positive for COVID-19, whether related to viral infection or secondary effect of treatment, through a bibliographic search. Methods: The methodology adopted consisted of an integrative literature review, based on research carried out in renowned databases, such as Pubmed/Medline and Google Scholar. Search strategies and pre-established criteria were used, using the following descriptors: Coronavirus, Dentistry, Oral manifestations and Oral Mucosa. Results: The research identified several common oral manifestations in patients diagnosed with COVID-19, including dysgeusia, xerostomia and ulcerative lesions. Furthermore, an association was observed between poor oral hygiene and worsening of the disease, with studies indicating a high prevalence of oral changes in severe cases. The treatment of oral lesions involved the use of specific medications and appropriate hygiene practices, highlighting the fundamental role of dental professionals in identifying and managing these manifestations, which can serve as indicators of COVID-19 infection. Final considerations: Given the current COVID-19 scenario, there is a need for more detailed studies, which will serve as a tool to assist healthcare professionals in offices, as well as professionals in other hospital institutions.
