Abstract
Objective: To identify the prevalence of adverse events in patients undergoing surgeries and their association with clinical and surgical characteristics. Methods: A retrospective, cross-sectional, quantitative study analyzed the medical records of adult surgical patients at a university hospital during 2019. The Global Trigger Tool methodology was employed, along with descriptive statistical analyses, Poisson Regression, and association analysis with a 95% confidence interval. Results: The prevalence rate of surgical adverse events was 17.3%. Patients undergoing elective surgery had a higher Prevalence Ratio compared to those undergoing urgent and emergency surgery (1.12, 95% CI: 1.01-1.25; p=0.034). Elective surgeries showed a higher prevalence of adverse events in female patients (32.7%), with a history of allergies and in orthopedic surgical clinics. In urgent and emergency surgeries, the highest prevalence was in male patients (20.4%), in the Surgical Emergency Department specialty, with systemic arterial hypertension, and those undergoing spinal or general anesthesia. Conclusion: Identifying the prevalence and association between clinical and demographic variables stands out as a crucial indicator, emphasizing the need for surveillance and intervention strategies to improve the quality of care practice.
