Abstract

Objective: To assess the incidence of major ophthalmic diseases in neonates born at a Public Hospital in a city in the state of Maranhão. Methods: Observational, cross-sectional, and prospective study conducted at a Macro-regional Hospital in Maranhão from January 2023 to August 2023. Results: The results were based on the evaluation of 150 neonates, with the majority of mothers aged 18 to 25, from other cities in Maranhão, single, having completed high school, and being of brown race. Among neonates undergoing Red Reflex Testing (RRT), the majority had a weight greater than 3 kg, with 71.33%, and 98.67% had normal test results. None of them had a family history of ocular pathology or a history of cancer in the family. Conclusion: The Red Reflex Test is considered extremely important for assessing visual acuity from birth. Early diagnosis can prevent irreversible damage to vision, allowing for effective treatment.
