Abstract

Objective: To describe the prevalence of sarcopenia in elderly people at high risk for muscle loss, using Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) and calf circumference (CC). Methods: This was a descriptive, cross-sectional, prevalence study, carried out after approval by the local ethics committee. The information for this research was obtained by completing performance and functional capacity scales, collecting anthropometric data, analyzing ultrasound and medical records of elderly patients hospitalized. Results: 32 elderly people were evaluated, all patients over 65 years of age, which 72% had sarcopenia through CC. The average CC of the evaluated patients is 28.5cm. When using the Ultrasound device, all patients had sarcopenia. Comparing the average length of stay for patients admitted with sarcopenia versus those admitted without sarcopenia, it can be noted that the period was longer in the group with sarcopenia evaluated with CC. Conclusion: The majority of elderly people evaluated are sarcopenic since entering the hospital, a fact that can contribute significantly to the prolongation of the average length of hospital stay, as well as negatively impacting outcomes.
