Abstract

Objective: To analyze the costs of vaginal and cesarean birth procedures in a high-risk hospital in Pernambuco between 2019 and 2020. Methods: Descriptive, retrospective, exploratory study of economic evaluation and financial viability, conducted in a reference maternity hospital in the state standing. Using the absorption costing method, the research involved documentary data collection, interviews and consultations with DATASUS. Results: It was found that a total of 4006 births were performed at the study health institution between 2019 and 2020. It was found that 41.51% of births were vaginal while cesarean births represented around 58.49% of the total, with an increase of 21 .6% of cesarean sections from 2019 to 2020. In 2019, the total cost of vaginal birth was R$37,900.00, while the total cost for cesarean birth reached R$234,895.50. In 2020, these numbers increased significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic, with vaginal birth costing R$50,888.15 and cesarean section R$411,603.69 (annual values). Conclusion: There was an increase in birth costs, especially cesarean sections, with a slight increase during the pandemic period, highlighting financial and operational challenges. Efficient management was demonstrated by the difference between hospital costs and transfers from the Unified Health System.
