Abstract

Objective: To analyze the psychosocial changes that type 1 diabetes mellitus causes in children and adolescents. Bibliographic review: Diabetes mellitus (DM1) is caused by total insulin deficiency due to the autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta cells. The disease has a peak incidence between 10 and 14 years of age. It is estimated that DM1 affects 0.3% of the population aged 20 years or less. As it is a chronic disease, after diagnosis, one of the biggest challenges is the acceptance phase, as it involves changes in lifestyle habits. Psychodynamic impacts are observed, generating a feeling of mourning, both in family members and patients. Changes in the entire family's routine, as well as feelings of fear and tiredness are common, which ends up compromising physical and emotional well-being. A support network is of great importance so that this population feels welcomed and safer to face the challenges that DM1 can bring. Final considerations: It was found that feelings of fear and uncertainty arise, as well as the development of psychiatric disorders, especially anxiety disorders and depression in children and adolescents. Thus, we highlight the positive actions of the family, school, and multidisciplinary team.
