Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the pattern of breastfeeding in autistic children in the city of Maceió, Alagoas. Methods: Autism Spectrum Disorder registered in 4 institutions. A protocol containing socioeconomic information, personal history, perinatal data and breastfeeding practice was applied. Descriptive statistics were used to present the general, clinical and nutritional characteristics of the population. The difference in the average duration of exclusive breastfeeding according to perinatal maternal variables was analyzed using the t test for independent samples, where p <0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. Results: It was found that 2/3 of the sample were not exclusively breastfed until the sixth month. It was possible to identify that the average breastfeeding rate for males was lower than that for females and children born through surgical delivery had a shorter period of breastfeeding when compared to those born through normal birth (p =0.03). Conclusion: Therefore, it can be concluded that the indices related to BF time were unsatisfactory for the majority of autistic children, falling short of what is recommended by the World Health Organization.
