Abstract
Objective: Explore the anatomical changes in edentulous patients using prostheses and their implications in implant surgery. Literature Review: The increasing elderly population drives the demand for rehabilitative treatments. Conventional removable dentures are a common alternative for the rehabilitation of edentulous patients, however, often associated with exacerbating bone resorption caused by tooth loss, leading to anatomical changes in supporting structures, highlighting the alternative of rehabilitation through osseointegrable implants. However, their installation can lead to nerve injuries due to bone remodeling and consequent alteration of anatomical landmarks, requiring pre or trans-surgical methods such as advanced imaging techniques, nerve mobilization, and grafts to minimize the risk of complications. Final considerations: Implant rehabilitation improves the patient's quality of life; conventional prostheses worsen bone resorption and complicate implant placement. Despite trans-surgical alternatives, pre-examination is the most recommended procedure regarding nerve injuries.
