Abstract

Objective: To correlate mortality rates due to malignant neoplasm of the stomach with data on the treatment of the disease in the northern region compared to Brazil. Methods: This is a descriptive epidemiological study, based on data collected from the "Panel-oncology" and "Vital statistics" databases of the Department of Informatics of the Sistema Único de Saúde (DATASUS). Results: There is a downward trend in the number of deaths in Brazil, but not at the expense of the northern region, since it tends to remain constant. In addition, it is observed that the duration of treatment in the northern region tends to be longer than 60 days and in Brazil, primarily, 30 days, followed by up to 60 days. Regarding the number of patients treated, there is an upward trend in the number of patients treated in all Brazilian macro-regions, with the exception of the northern region. Conclusion: It was evidenced that although the North is not the macro-region with the highest mortality rates from gastric cancer in Brazil, it has the worst rates of treatment of this neoplasm, in addition to having a deficit of qualified professionals in the oncological area.
