Abstract
Objective: To identify the evidence in the literature on the role of dental surgeons in the care of ICU patients. Methods: This is an integrative literature review conducted in the Lilacs, SciELO, and PubMed databases, with the descriptors dental surgeon, oral health, and Intensive Care Unit. Results: The results showed that it is up to the dental surgeon to monitor and evaluate patients with oral adequacy actions, such as caries and root fragments, mucosal biofilms, treatment of periodontal disease and oral lesions, considered as triggering foci of inflammatory processes that can contribute to aggravate the health condition of patients hospitalized in intensive care. Conclusion: Thus, the dental surgeon plays an important role in the care of patients hospitalized in intensive care with actions aimed at the treatment and prevention of complications associated with the oral cavity, favoring comprehensive and safer care during hospitalization. However, further intervention studies are needed related to the effectiveness of the actions performed by the dental surgeon and the improvement of the patient's health condition, aiming to contribute to evidence-based best practices in the ICU context.
