Abstract

Objective: To assess adherence to oral antineoplastic therapy and knowledge about pharmacological treatment in patients treated at the onco-hematology outpatient clinic of a public hospital in Maranhão. Methods: This is an analytical, prospective and cross-sectional study conducted with 50 participants. Adherence assessment was performed using the following instruments: Measure Treatment Adherence (MTA) and a questionnaire designed to describe the sociodemographic and clinical profile and assess patients' knowledge about treatment. Results: The study was composed mainly of female participants (54%) and with a mean age of 55.8 (± 14.53) years. Chronic myeloid leukemia was the most common diagnosis (52%) and hydroxyurea was the most prescribed medication (44%). Most participants had been in treatment for 37 months or more (36%). However, more than 70% were unaware of the purpose of drug therapy. The MTA results highlighted an overall average indicative of adherence to treatment (5.56 ± 0.31), although some questions revealed non-adherence behaviors, such as occasional forgetting to take medication. Conclusion: The results obtained lead to the conclusion that there is good medication adherence in the evaluated public. Knowledge about treatment showed deficits, highlighting the importance of continuing education strategies.
