Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of the use of potentially inappropriate medications (PIM) in hospitalized elderly people, polypharmacy and associated risk factors, in addition to identifying possible Medication-Related Problems (DRP). Methods: This is a descriptive, retrospective and quantitative cross-sectional study, conducted with 86 individuals, aged ≥ 60 years, carried out from July to October 2023 at the Medical Clinic Unit (UCM) of the University Hospital. The Beers Criteria (2019) was used to evaluate MPI, the PRM assessment was carried out according to Strand. Pearson's Chi Square test was used to determine associations (p<0.05) between sex, DRP and polypharmacy. Results: A total of 88.3% of patients had MPI when prescribed from admission to discharge, the most prescribed were proton pump inhibitors (51.11%) and antipsychotics (16.29%), 27 patients had one or more DRPs during hospitalization. No statistical significance was observed for the variable polypharmacy and gender (p=0.859) and presence of DRP (p=0.308). Conclusion: Due to the high prevalence of PIM that should be avoided in the elderly and due to polypharmacy, health education is important to avoid problems and health problems resulting from the use of inappropriate medications. The study should be expanded on the relationship between DRPs and polypharmacy in line with more robust studies.
