Abstract
Objective: To analyze the effectiveness of thrombolytic therapy in the treatment of ischemic stroke. Methods: This is an integrative review, with a qualitative and exploratory approach, of a basic nature. The research search was carried out in the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Latin American and Caribbean Literature (LILACS) and Virtual Health Library (VHL) databases, from January 2019 to February 2024. Results: Reviewed studies indicate that Intravenous Thrombolysis Therapy (IVT) is highly effective in treating ischemic stroke if applied within 4.5 hours of the onset of symptoms, using agents such as Alteplase (rtPA) to unblock the blood vessels and limit brain damage, thereby improving neurological recovery and reducing morbidity and mortality. However, the therapy presents risks, such as intracerebral hemorrhages, requiring careful patient selection to optimize benefits and mitigate complications. Final considerations: It is considered that thrombolytic therapy in stroke facilitates rapid reperfusion of blocked vessels, minimizing brain damage and improving functional recovery, evidenced by the reduction in scores on the stroke severity identification and stratification scale (NIHSS scale).
