Abstract

Objective: To analyze medical students' perceptions of their preparation for dealing with death during medical school. Methods: Integrative literature review with search for scientific articles in the Medline, Lilacs, Scielo and Cocharane Library databases using the descriptors “Death”, “Medical Students” and “Undergraduate medical education” validated by Descriptors in Health Sciences (DeCS), in combination with the Boolean operator “AND”. Results: 695 articles were found, 10 of which were included in the final sample after applying the PRISMA flowchart. Medical students were found to have frequent distressing feelings about mortality, uncertainty and lack of skills to communicate professionally in dying situations. Discussion of death and dying during undergraduate studies is limited to specific disciplines and moments, without a longitudinal approach, so preparation is described as superficial and inadequate. Finals considerations: The studies point to a deficit in the preparation for dealing with death during medical school and the need to include more effective approaches that promote the development of emotional skills to build a more conscious and humane profession.
