Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the serum dosage of vitamin B12 in pregnant women and the importance of prenatal screening. Methods: A pilot, longitudinal, study, with 79 patients pregnant women. Results: The average age of the patients was 31.4 + 7.4 years, with an average of 2.3 pregnancies + 1.3; 0.9 + 1.0 deliveries and 0.3 + 0.7 abortions. The vitamin B12 was 374 ± 190 pg/ml, being considered normal in 75% of the pregnant women studied, borderline in 16.7%, low in 6.9% and high in 1.4%. In the second trimester, the average B12 was 321 ± 191 pg/ml, with 20.8% with low dosage, 39.6% normal and 37.5% borderline. In the third trimester, the average B12 was 302 ± 222 pg/ml, with 28.2% with low dosage, 28.2% normal, 38.5% borderline and 5.1% elevated. There was no association between the dosages of vitamin B12 and the consumption of meat, milk and eggs (p>0.05). There were no cases of confusion, dementia, loss of sensitivity or limb tingling, but there was association with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Conclusion: Considering the decline of vitamin B12 throughout the prenatal period and the large number of borderline dosages, prenatal screening should be considered.
