Perception of the nurse front of the patient safety practices in an in custom unit

Abstract

Objective: To know the perception and comprehension of nurses in inpatient units regarding patient safety practices in their work routine. Methods: Qualitative study with nine nurses from inpatient units, selected using the snowball technique. Applied structured form. Descriptive statistics were applied and the content analysis technique was applied to qualitative data. Research submitted for ethical opinion. Results: It appears that the sample consisted of seven male and two female nurses, aged between 24 and 41 years, and experience in a hospitalization unit from five months to 12 years. Three categories emerged: the inpatient unit and its relationship with patient safety; attitude to prevent and/or investigate adverse event and challenges faced to ensure patient safety. There was consensus on the conduct in the face of an adverse event, based on guidance, training, implementation of protocols and health education. Conclusion: It is concluded that continuing education actions are the best approaches to reducing adverse events, mainly due to the role of nursing in health care, which proves the need for evidence-based nursing practice.
