Abstract
Objective: To understand the scientific evidence on the social representations of epilepsy. Methods: Integrative review study, the guiding research question: What is the profile of research carried out regarding epilepsy, stigma of the disease and its social representations? Research carried out in October 2023, through the search for: articles available online in the databases Embase, National Library of Medicine – PubMed, Web of Science – WOS, ProQuest, SciVerse Scopus – SCOPUS. The Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS) were used : “Epilepsy”; “Stigna”; “Social Representations”. The Boolean operator “AND” for crossing key words. Results: 07 articles made reference to epilepsy, 06 articles reported stigma of the disease and 01 article was related to social representations. Stigmatizing representations of epilepsy transform self-image by inducing negative experiences in the behavior of patients, family members and society. Knowledge about epilepsy can help reduce the stigmatization of the disease. Final considerations: Facing the problem of disease stigma and its repercussions on the lives of people with epilepsy, family members, society is important for the State and health services to promote reception, care and public policies to reduce stigma on people with epilepsy.
