Abstract

Objective: To analyze the epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of tuberculosis in the State of Maranhão, aiming to provide critical insights to inform health policies and clinical practices. Methods: Using a descriptive observational epidemiological approach, data from the Notifiable Diseases Information System from 2016 to 2022 were analyzed. Results: The study revealed an alarming increase in tuberculosis cases over time, highlighting significant disparities in terms of sex, age group, and geographical distribution of cases. The predominance in adult males and the increasing incidence of HIV/TB coinfection are points of concern. The data analysis underscores the challenges in diagnosing and treating tuberculosis, including the need for effective public policies and specific interventions for at-risk groups. Conclusion: The importance of a coordinated and integrated approach to address this public health challenge is emphasized. This study contributes to the understanding of tuberculosis in the Maranhão context and suggests strategies to reduce its burden and improve health outcomes.
