Abstract
Objective: To correlate temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and primary headaches (PC), understanding their importance for assertive diagnosis in dental care. Methods: The articles were researched using two databases: Pubmed and the Virtual Health Library (VHL), using the following descriptors: “Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction Syndrome”, “Orofacial Pain” and “Headache Disorders, Primary”. The inclusion criteria used were: articles correlated with the chosen theme, without delimiting any language and any date of publication. After the search, 57 articles were identified. Results: After excluding duplicate articles, other literature reviews and articles not related to the topic, 14 articles were selected for this review. The articles indicated that the primary headaches most associated with temporomandibular disorders are mainly migraine and tension-type headache (TTC), respectively, and that integrated treatment of the two conditions helps to improve prognosis. Final considerations: Therefore, when they are found together, the two disorders should be treated concomitantly by professionals, with a view to successful and effective treatment, given the correlation between these disorders.
