Abstract
Objective: To investigate the influence of Pilates practice on the functional capacity of elderly women, considering the continuous prevalence of chronic back pain, especially low back pain. Methods: The TIMED UP AND GO (TUG) test was analyzed to determine whether there was a difference in functional capacity between elderly women who practiced pilates and those who did not. 32 women participated, being divided into two groups. Although a significant difference was observed in the TUG test time between both groups, with and without low back pain, there was a statistical difference between pilates practitioners and the control group. Results: Among the practitioners, 8 had low back pain (GP2) and 9 reported no pain (GP1). In the sedentary group, 10 had low back pain (GS2) and 8 did not report it (GS1). The average age was 65.6 (±3.7) years, with an average weight of 63.4 (±9.1) kg, average height of 1.53 (±0.05) meters and average BMI of 26. 7 (±5.8). We found that even without being statistically significant, there is a difference indicating a difference indicating a functional impact on functional capacity in elderly women who practice pilates. Conclusion: The association of non-specific low back pain with differences in functional capacity, highlighting the need for more studies on the benefits of physical activity for elderly women with low back pain.
