Abstract

Objective: To review the topic of peri-implant tissues, their histomorphological aspects, clinical manifestations and inflammatory processes. Literature review: Periodontal and peri-implant tissues have similar histomorphological characteristics, although each has particularities. Peri-implant health is characterized by the presence of connective tissue covered by keratinized or non-keratinized epithelium and without radiographically visible bone loss. Peri-implant mucositis is an inflammatory condition of the soft tissues surrounding the implant, without bone loss other than that due to initial bone remodeling. Peri-implantitis is an inflammatory lesion of the mucosa around an endosseous implant with progressive loss of supporting peri-implant bone. Final considerations: Periodontal and peri-implant tissues have anatomical and histomorphological characteristics in common, although each has its own particularities. Furthermore, anatomical knowledge and clinical manifestations of peri-implant health processes and diseases are extremely important in clinical practice.
