Abstract
Objective: To analyze the risk factors for brain injuries in babies followed in the third stage of the Kangaroo Mother Care (MC). Methods: This is a documentary, descriptive and quantitative research carried out at the Kangaroo Care Unit (UCINca) of a tertiary reference hospital in Gynecology, Obstetrics and Neonatology. The medical records of 45 babies in the third stage of MC were analyzed. An instrument was used, covering information about maternal and newborn (NB) data. Results: In the third stage of MC, 53.3% of babies were male. Predominantly, 73.3% were appropriate for gestational age (AGA) 73.3% were born by cesarean section. As for mothers, 35.6% had completed secondary education (EMC). Prenatal care was not provided by 33.3% of mothers. Main risk factors included specific hypertensive disorder of pregnancy (GLD) in 60.0%, urinary tract infection (UTI) in 44.4%, with 88.9% of babies developing hypoglycemia and 42.2% jaundice, affecting the neuromotor development. Conclusion: The most predominant risk factors for brain injury were analyzed, categorized as maternal, gestational and postnatal factors. The most viewed risk factors were pathologies during pregnancy with more significant DHEG and UTI values, followed by the clinical presentations of Newborn with jaundice and hypoglycemia.
