Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the clinical aspects of women’s periodontium and verify its association with pregnancy. Methods: This is a cross-sectional observational study with 40 participants, 20 women in the immediate postpartum period and 20 women who have never been pregnant. Participants underwent a socioeconomic questionnaire and a clinical periodontal examination in the mouth to obtain the parameters of probing depth (PD) and clinical attachment level (CAL). Categorical variables were analyzed by Fisher’s Exact test and for numerical variables the Mann Whitney test was used. The level of significance adopted was 5%. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee. Results: Postpartum women were predominantly black/brown (75%) and 90% had primary education/high school. There were significant differences in skin color (p= 0.0248), education level (p = 0.0001), monthly family income (p = 0.0036), marital status (p < 0.0001) and number of sites with 3mm CIN (p=0. 0072). Conclusion: The postpartum women had lower socioeconomic status, lower schooling and worse periodontal clinical rates, with greater losses of clinical insertion.
