Abstract

Objective: To investigate the ethical and legal challenges associated with patients with Münchhausen Syndrome in medical practice. Methods: An integrative literature review was carried out using the following databases: EMBASE, SciELO, Scopus, Web of Science, Lilacs, Medline, Cochrane). Articles in Portuguese, English and Spanish, with no restriction on the year of publication, that addressed ethical and legal issues related to Munchausen syndrome in medical practice were included. The research was guided by the question: "What are the ethical and legal challenges involving patients with Munchausen syndrome in medical practice?". Results: Of the 3059 articles initially identified, 654 were analyzed after deleting duplicates and non-pertinent articles. After selection and analysis, 7 articles were included in the final sample, addressing several ethical and legal issues associated with the management of Munchausen syndrome. Final considerations: This mapping of publications, which adopts the methodology of good practices for decision-making, can benefit family members, managers and professionals involved in the care of patients with Münchhausen Syndrome. However, it is important to highlight that there was no search in the gray literature, as well as in specific databases in the area of mental health and law.
