Abstract
Objective: Investigate the main benefits and applications of magnesium sulfate in health. Methods: This is an integrative review in which the electronic databases Scielo, PubMed and Science Direct were used and the descriptors Magnesium sulfate, Therapeutic Use and Illnesses were used. Regarding inclusion, we chose articles in the original category, available in full, published in Portuguese, English and Spanish, with a time interval between 2017 and 2023. Results: Magnesium ion is found in large quantities in extracellular media and intracellular, having fundamental importance in several enzymatic processes, being an effective, safe, financially accessible medicine and presenting numerous benefits. The main effects observed in the 16 studies found highlighted the efficacy and potential pharmacological properties of magnesium sulfate as a bronchodilator, analgesic, its use in obstetrics with good effectiveness for inhibiting premature labor and in the treatment of convulsive crises associated with eclampsia. and pre-eclampsia. Final considerations: According to the evidence, magnesium sulfate is considered essential by the WHO because it is effective and relatively clinically safe to meet health needs, however there is still a need for more studies to prove and elucidate the mechanism of action of magnesium sulfate.
