Abstract
Objective: To analyze the main active substances used in cosmetics to prevent and treat skin aging. Literature review: Senescence is a slow and gradual process that occurs irreversibly. In this way, the skin is always exposed to both intrinsic and extrinsic factors. There are several ways to mitigate and prevent skin aging in dermatology. The benefits, indications and mechanisms of action for each active substance or group of active ingredients were described, in addition to showing the effectiveness through already published clinical studies. Final considerations: This investigation was able to show the main active substances used in cosmetics to prevent and treat skin aging, such as antioxidants (vitamins, polyphenols and flavonoids) and cell regulators (retinoids, peptides, hormones and botanicals). This demonstrates the relevance of the use of cosmetics that can protect and improve the appearance of the skin, reducing oxidative stress and minimizing collagen degradation.
