Abstract
Objective: To compare the audiometric success of tympanoplasty using temporal fascia and cartilage grafts, regardless of the technique, at a tertiary hospital in São Paulo. Methods: An observational, longitudinal and retrospective study was carried out by analyzing the medical records of 56 patients who underwent unilateral tympanoplasty between January 2019 and February 2023. Data were processed using IBM Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 26.0 software, where the Shapiro Wilk, Chi-square and Fisher's Exact Test were performed. The statistical significance between the difference in means of the variables was verified through paired and unpaired t-Student tests. Results whose p-value was < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results: The average reduction in the speech recognition threshold (LRF), in the preoperative versus postoperative LRF comparison, was 10.9 dB, with a standard deviation of 9.8 dB (p<0.001). Patients who used cartilage had a success rate of 67.9% and those who used fascia grafts had a success rate of 64.3%, with no relevant difference (p=0.788). Conclusion: Significant improvement in hearing post-tympanoplasty was observed, regardless of the graft used.
