Abstract
Objective: To highlight the impacts of using Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) in critically ill patients with COVID-19. Methods: This is an integrative review of a descriptive and exploratory nature, carried out in March 2024. This research was guided by the PICO strategy. The search was conducted using the following databases: LILACS and MEDLINE via VHL and Embase via the Cochrane Library. Thus, MeSH were selected as descriptors, both being crossed by the Boolean operator AND. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were used. Therefore, 10 studies were selected. Results: According to most studies, early ECMO support, compared to conventional management, significantly improves patient survival. However, although ECMO has demonstrated its ability to save lives in individuals with severe COVID-19, the available data from the selected studies are still insufficient in terms of determining its effectiveness, understanding the impacts and identifying ideal candidates who benefit from this treatment. Final considerations: It was found that the most recent research demonstrated a possible benefit of ECMO, as it resulted in lower mortality in critically ill patients with COVID-19.
