Abstract
Objective: To understand the psychic symptoms and associated factors in patients on the waiting list for orthopedic surgeries. Methods: A cross-sectional study with quantitative data analysis was conducted. The target population included patients awaiting orthopedic surgeries in a public hospital in Piauí. Data were collected through questionnaires, including sociodemographic variables and psychiatric symptoms, based on the Babel questionnaire. The data obtained were analyzed by logistic regression using SPSS® software. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee. Results: The sample consisted of 68 participants, predominantly male (66.2%). Of the sample, 36 patients (47.06%) had depressive symptoms, while 27 (39.71%) had anxious symptoms. Previous psychiatric diagnosis was strongly associated with the presence of mental illness (p<0.01). The type of injury (p=0.014) and the length of hospitalization (p=0.096) also significantly influenced the patients' symptoms. Conclusion: Statistical analysis highlighted previous psychiatric diagnosis as the main predictor of mental illness, while gender and types of injuries showed significant associations. The findings highlight the need for individualized approaches in maintaining mental health, considering the specific clinical and psychosocial characteristics of patients.
