Abstract

Objective: To investigate the risk of sarcopenia, muscle strength, and inflammatory profile in diabetic patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and undergoing hemodialysis (HD). Methods: This observational, retrospective study collected data from medical records, evaluated inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α), screened for sarcopenia using the SARC-F, and assessed anthropometric measurements and handgrip strength. Analyses were conducted using the SPSS statistical package with a 95% confidence level (p<0.05) and JASP Version 0.16.1. Results: The mean age was 64 years, 54% were male, and the average BMI was 30.79 kg/m². The results indicate a risk of sarcopenia in both groups (CKD and HD). Higher levels of IL-1β were observed in the conservative group, while IL-8 was higher in the HD group (p<0.001). Urea, creatinine, and potassium levels were higher in the HD group (p<0.05). Serum levels of hematocrit, hemoglobin, and left calf circumference were lower in the HD group with a risk of sarcopenia (p<0.05). Conclusion: Participants showed positive scores for sarcopenia and inflammation markers, with higher levels in the HD group. Handgrip strength and left calf circumference were lower in the HD group.
