Abstract

Objective: To identify the epidemiological characteristics of the homeless population. Methods: This is an integrative literature review, which grouped and systematized articles that had already been published. As inclusion criteria, the articles had to deal with the epidemiological profile of the homeless population, published no more than 10 years ago, available in electronic format and in Portuguese, English or Spanish.  After surveying the Virtual Health Library (VHL), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) and National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health (PUBMED) databases, 207 articles were identified and 17 were selected after analyzing the abstract and title. Results: By exploring a range of articles on the subject, it was possible to identify that the epidemiological characteristics of homeless people are described by the prevalence of tuberculosis; use of psychoactive substances and mental disorders; sexually transmitted infections and chronic non-communicable diseases. Final considerations: The epidemiological characteristics of this social group are determined by the peculiarities of their way of life, as well as by inequality and social exclusion. Therefore, in view of this panorama, it is possible to see the need to expand the scope of health services for this part of the population.
