Abstract

Objective: To investigate the contributions of the father’s participation in prenatal care and childbirth and see factors that can intervene in this process. Methods: This is a qualitative exploratory-descriptive  research istudy, which involved postpartum women and their partners, by signing and an Informes Consent Form.  The research took place in a philanthropic hospital in the city of Garibaldil-RS, the interviews followed a semi- structured iscript, were audio recorded and later transcribed and organized for analysis of the results obtained. The research was approved by the Research Ethics Committee. Results: The results obtained from the research participants were that paternal participation in pregnancy is synonymous with support, protection, safety and care for the pregnant woman, as the woman feels more comfortable. Conclusion: Given so many benefits that the father figure brings, we as nurses must increasingly encourage the participation of partners in prenatal consultations and exams, so that the father becomes involved in the gestational process, having a better understanding and helping in the best way for pregnant women.
