Abstract

Objective: To describe current scientific evidence on the control of bloodstream infections related to central venous catheters. Bibliographic review: Central venous catheters are widely used in Intensive Care Units. This procedure is considered invasive and increases the risk of catheter-related bloodstream infection, generating a high economic cost. One way to reduce the incidence of these infections is to adopt a checklist and guide for inserting a central venous catheter to reduce the risk of infection at the time of catheter insertion. Final considerations: The application of the checklist and the bundle for catheter passage is not implemented alone, since it requires a set of interventions, based on international Guidelines and Protocols that recommend broader interventions, aiming to cover the maximum possible risk of infection in the bloodstream related to central venous catheters. It is important to highlight that checklists and the budget must be reviewed and updated with new medical advances, to present the best results, with nursing care free from harm.
