Abstract

Aims: To analyze general therapies for the treatment of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), highlighting advances in the use of antiretrovirals and their implications for patients' health.  Literature review: HIV, which causes Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), is a pathology that compromises the immune system, reducing the CD4 T cell count.  Without adequate treatment, this makes it difficult to fight the virus and favors opportunistic infections.  Originating from the chimpanzee simian immunodeficiency virus, HIV has spread globally since the 19th century.  Antiretrovirals are the basis of treatment, improving patients' quality of life by inhibiting viral replication.  Studies show that combination therapies are effective in suppressing the virus, although challenges such as treatment adherence and viral resistance persist.  The continued development of new medicines and adaptation of existing therapies are crucial for effective disease management.  Final considerations: HIV treatment with antiretrovirals has revolutionized the prognosis of the disease, transforming it from a death sentence into a manageable chronic condition.  However, it is essential to maintain research efforts to improve treatments, ensure patient adherence and address drug resistance.  Education and ongoing support are vital to the success of these therapies.
