Abstract

Objective: Analyze the leadership style practiced by nurses working in a hospital institution. Methods: Descriptive study with a quantitative approach. The study population consisted of nurses participating on a national WhatsApp® group. The data collection instrument was structured using online electronic form, divided into two parts: the first with sociodemographic data and the second with assertive questions, on a Likert scale, based on the leadership styles addressed in Daniel Goleman's studies. The questionnaire was sent via invitation and electronic link to a publicly available number. Results: The answers of 54 nurses were analyzed. The six leadership styles proposed by the study were observed among the nurses who underwent the research: Authoritative 11.7%, Pacesetting 15.3%, Democratic 18.7%, Coaching 19.2%, Affiliative 17.4%, Visionary 17.7%. Conclusion:  It was evident that the coaching leadership style is the most practiced in hospital institutions, but there is room for various leadership styles, as the ideal is for leaders to be flexible enough to read the situational moment and adapt their way of leading their followers.
