Abstract

Objective: To analyze the evidence available in the literature on the relationship between breastfeeding and Diabetes Mellitus. Methods: This is an integrative review based on the research question: “What is the available evidence on the relationship between breastfeeding and the prevention of Diabetes Mellitus”? The search included primary studies from the last ten years in Portuguese, English and Spanish, using the information sources LILACS, Web of Science, IBECS, MEDLINE and EMBASE. Data were extracted and categorized using a script created by the authors, and tools for evaluating the levels of evidence and methodological quality of the studies were used. Results: A final sample of 19 studies was obtained, categorized between studies that addressed issues related to breastfeeding time (47.37%, n=9); to the intestinal microbiome (15.79%, n=3); to maternal and child nutrition (21.05%, n=4) and studies with inconsistent results (15.79%, n=3). Final considerations: Breastfeeding generates changes in biological markers, insulin hormones, among other factors, however, it has not been proven that this single action, that is, breastfeeding, is capable of preventing the disease from developing, as there are other factors involved, such as genetics and lifestyle habits.
