Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the quality of self-management in adolescents with type 1 Diabetes Mellitus treated at a pediatric endocrinology outpatient clinic. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted at the public hospital. Thirty adolescents aged between 11 and 18 years participated. The Diabetes Self-Management Profile (DSMP) instrument was applied. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics using the JMP® Pro software version 13. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee. Results: The measurement of the adolescentes total score showed an average of 50.3 ± 8.1 SD, with scores ranging from 35 to 71 points; therefore, no adolescent reached the maximum score of 88 points. Regarding the DSMP dimensions, the maximum scores were achieved in physical activity, hypoglycemia, and insulinization; however, in nutrition and blood glucose monitoring, the scores were lower than desired. The variability of the data revealed heterogeneity in knowledge and behaviors for self-management, with consequent vulnerability of adolescents to decompensations. Conclusion: The variation in adolescentes attitudes in the management of type 1 diabetes mellitus has an impact on the quality of self-care. New studies are needed to address the issue in other settings and populations.
