Abstract

Objective: To discuss caregiving practices for socially vulnerable individuals in shelter units managed by a philanthropic agency linked to a religious organization. Methods: Qualitative research grounded in Social Representations Theory, conducted in three shelter units associated with a religious institution in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Data were collected through participant observation from March to September 2023, focusing on caregiving practices developed by the teams. Results: It was found that caregiving practices for socially vulnerable individuals are routinely carried out by the teams, involving external partnerships and actions aimed at addressing nutritional, educational, and spiritual needs. These practices are supported by religious principles of care for others, preservation of life, ethical and moral principles of benevolence and prophetic gift, emphasizing the preservation of body, mind, and spirit. Conclusion: The study highlights the importance of initiatives by religious organizations in promoting health and well-being, highlighting the subjectivities that intersect with the doctrinal precepts of the religion to which the institution is linked. This fosters the construction and transformation of social practices and representations regarding the group and the care provided.
