Abstract
Objective: To describe how the motivational approach led by nurses enables behavior change to improve adherence to treatment, reduce the progression of kidney disease and reduce anguish and suffering regarding coping with the disease. Experience report: This is an experience report about the work of a nurse in the nephrology service of a reference hospital in the specialty, especially for patients with chronic kidney disease who live outside the city of Rio de Janeiro. The experience took place between March and May 2024. The results demonstrate that with the progression of chronic kidney disease, patients' motivation decreases, leading to a lack of adherence and withdrawal from their relationships with healthcare professionals. Therefore, in their care, nurses must evoke patients' motivations for change, seeking the best way to achieve their goals. Final considerations: The experience demonstrates the importance of the motivational approach, guiding nurses' conduct in changing the behavior of patients with chronic kidney disease. This allows patients to recognize their failures, strengthen adherence to treatment and alleviate the anguish related to coping with the disease.
