Abstract
Objective: To verify the factors associated with the health literacy of adults followed in primary health care. Methods: This is a descriptive, cross-sectional study conducted with 357 adults living in urban and rural areas of a municipality in the state of Piauí. Data were collected using the Brazilian version of the Test of Functional Literacy in Adults (S-TOFHLA) and analyzed using Pearson's chi-square test. Results: Inadequate/marginal health literacy was predominant (64.7%), being more frequent among adults living in rural areas (56.8%). Factors associated with health literacy were education level (p=0.001) and age group (p=0.001). Regarding understanding health information, the average reading comprehension scores of the adult participants were higher than the average numeracy scores, with higher averages among adults living in rural areas. Conclusion: It is concluded that the health literacy of adults was inadequate/marginal, with worse averages among those living in rural areas and an association with education level and age group.
