Abstract

Objective: To demonstrate the number of students with altered color vision, using the color blindness screening test in the population studied in the Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry and Physiotherapy course. Methods: This is a descriptive, cross-sectional observational study, which consists of participants completing the Ishihara Color Test after accepting the informed consent form, using the Google Forms platform. The individuals invited to participate in the research were recruited from a private higher education institution, located in the city of Belo Horizonte (MG). Results: 402 people answered the questionnaire, so that 4.7% of students were screened as color blind and 95.3% as having normal vision. It was possible to associate the higher prevalence of this optical change in males, when compared to the results of the form for the opposite sex (p<0.001). Furthermore, there was no significant association (p = 0.7) between the variables color blindness and course. Conclusion: Given the prevalence of students with positive screening for color blindness at the institution, it is essential to carry out more research that helps in the process of recognizing color blind students and that promotes dynamics that facilitate the learning process of these individuals.
