Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the clinical and epidemiological aspects of adult patients admitted to an intensive care unit with lack of glycemic control (hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia). Methods: This is a cross-sectional study carried out based on the analysis of data from a research carried out in an intensive care unit in Zona da Mata Mineira. All adult individuals who showed lack of glycemic control (hyper and/or hypoglycemia) during the follow-up period were included, totaling a sample of 28 patients. Results: The variables age, sex, race, admission diagnoses, origin, outcome and score on the Simplified Acute Physiology Score (SAPS III) were demonstrated. Among the patients who presented the sample, 50.00% presented hypoglycemia and 50.00% hyperglycemia in their first glycemic loss. However, the study did not find a significant association between sociodemographic and clinical variations and the occurrence of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia. Conclusions: Lack of glycemic control is included in the negative results among critically ill patients, and prior knowledge of the clinical profile of individuals susceptible to these conditions is of great importance in order to implement resolving measures.
