Abstract
Objective: to analyze the knowledge of obstetric nurses in resolving childbirth with shoulder dystocia. Methods: exploratory, prospective study with a qualitative approach. Obstetric nurses who work as preceptors of the Obstetric Nursing Residency Program at the Federal University of Pará participated in the research, through interviews. The data were analyzed using the content analysis proposed by Bardin. Results: nurses identify dystocia based on the “turtle sign” associated with time, with the ALLERTA mnemonic being the most cited regarding the steps taken to resolve shoulder dystocia. However, when describing its steps, professionals demonstrate that they adapt or refer to the steps of another mnemonic, showing some confusion, not using the appropriate mnemonic for the woman's position or using the incorrect sequence. There is a need for updates and training due to reports of the team's lack of emotional preparation and experiences in using mnemonics, especially in internal maneuvers. Conclusion: obstetric nurses have knowledge on how to conduct a birth with shoulder dystocia, however, there is still a deficit in updates and difficulties in relation to the management proposed by mnemonics, especially in internal maneuvers and in parturients in non-supine positions.
