Abstract

Objective: To compare and describe the efficacy of surgical and pharmacological treatments for obesity, detailing the best options in the current context. Methods: This study is an integrative literature review, classified as descriptive and quantitative in terms of objectives and approach, using inclusion criteria of articles published in the last 10 years in Portuguese, English, and Spanish. Results: Regardless of the treatment used, weight loss is greater in the initial months or the first year of drug exposure. Pharmacological treatment can cause long-term adverse effects and side effects during use. It is possible to report adverse effects after bariatric surgery, besides the possibility of surgical complications and post-surgical syndromes. Thus, it is clear that no treatment is free from complications and/or adverse effects. Final considerations: It can be considered that there is no more or less effective treatment. The choice of the ideal treatment must follow the individual parameters of the patient and fully evaluate its indications, to ensure that the patient enjoys the benefits. Furthermore, adequate professional support is essential at all stages of treatment.
