Abstract

Objective: To investigate the teaching of palliative care during medical school and in professional practice among doctors involved in palliative care. Methods: This is an integrative literature review with an exploratory approach on the performance of doctors in palliative care and the importance of teaching palliative care during medical school for effective clinical communication between doctor and patient. Results: Twenty-three studies were included. The main points of these articles were: lack of training in palliative care during medical school; little or no specific discipline for palliative care during medical school; insufficient training of professionals; difficulty in approaching communication and medical attitude; the need to learn interpersonal and communication skills; doctors value quality of life, beneficence, and justice for end-of-life patients, but communication needs to be reinforced. Final considerations: Different unfavorable contexts were found considering the teaching of palliative care during medical school, which consequently impacts the performance of these professionals.
